A new bill introduced today Tuesday at the Provincial Parliament of Ontario intends to force the fast food chains to publish on their menu the number of calories in their dishes.

Although this law does not apply to establishments with fewer than 20 service points in the province, such legislation is a first in the country that could have a major impact. Ontario is by far the largest province with almost a third of all Canadians.
Did you know? In New York, the regulation also requires food restaurant chains to post calorie value of all dishes. NDP MP France Gélinas, who introduced a similar draft private bill in 2012 argued that it is difficult at the moment for a consumer who is experiencing some health problems to know, for example, a bran muffin can contain more calories than a donut, or a type of Burger King sandwich contains almost three times more sodium than another big McDonald sandwich format.

According to a recent survey commissioned by the Canadian Association of catering and food services, 92% of Canadians consider togo it important to know the nutritional value of the food they eat.

That's why 17 restaurant chains, representing a total 12,000 restaurants, including major players such as A & W, Dairy Queen, Harvey's, McDonald's, Milestones, Montana's, Pizza Pizza, Quiznos, Swiss Chalet and Tim Hortons are committed togo to implement Resto-Info program (information program on the restoration) across Canada by the end of the year.
