Montengro became an independent principality under the Ottoman Empire in 1852. Same year, the Montenegrin perper (MEP) was introduced, but in the following decades was østeriksk florin dominant currency. From 1906 to the union with Serbia in 1918 was again perper of 100 para current coin. From 1918 to 2001, followed Montenegro Serbia's monetary history, with the changing issues of the Dinar.
